Leaders in Weight Loss Treatments Sponsor Walk From Obesity

The Walk from Obesity begins at 10 a.m. (registration at 9 a.m.) Saturday at Theis Park. For more information on the event, including registration forms , visit http://walkfromobesity.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=279301.

The Walk from Obesity is a national event that raises awareness and provides funds to improve the quality of life and health of those affected by obesity. The mission of the Walk is to bring together all who are affected by obesity to draw national attention to the need for awareness, treatment and advocacy initiatives. Monies raised will be used to support two non-profit organizations: the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Foundation, focused on funding research on obesity and treatments, and the Obesity Action Coalition, dedicated to providing education and advocating for those affected by obesity.

“This is an important event that draws attention not only to this critical health issue but to the impact that obesity treatment can bring to people,” said Dr. Stephen Malley, Medical Director of NewHope Bariatrics Surgery Center and President of Malley Surgical Weight Loss Center. “We’re delighted that some of our patients will be participating in the Walk and want to thank those who’ve made a contribution to help battle the disease that affects more than two-thirds of America – which is a staggering number.”

NewHope Bariatrics surgery center began performing LAP-BAND® System procedures in October 2007 and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC) and has also received provisional status as a Center of Excellence by the American College of Surgeons.

DJ Teresa Maxwell from country music radio station 104.3 KEBQ-FM (Q104), a recent LAP-BAND patient who has already lost 30 pounds since her procedure, will participate in the walk and serve as the event’s master of ceremonies. C. Thomas Hitchcock, MD, FACS, an experienced surgeon who recently joined Malley Surgical and NewHope Bariatrics, will participate in the Walk as well.

The annual Walk from Obesity event is held in September and October in more than 70 cities across the nation. In 2007, Walk from Obesity generated more than 16,000 participants nationwide and raised more than $750,000 for obesity research. To date, the Walk has raised more than $2.5 million to support its efforts.

“The Walk from Obesity is the single most important obesity awareness event focusing on those affected that takes place each year,” said Joseph Nadglowski, Jr., Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) President and CEO and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Foundation Executive Director. “The Walk symbolizes the many nationwide efforts in the fight against obesity, morbid obesity and childhood obesity.”
