Lap-Band manufacturer seeks FDA approval for teen surgeries

Allergan, the maker of the Lap-Band system, has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve the device for adolescents as young as 14 and is currently conducting clinical trials on teenagers.

With an estimated one-third of American adolescents overweight or obese, Allergan believes the benefits of the procedure should be extended to younger patients.

A new study has discovered that weight loss surgery can help improve memory and concentration, adding to a growing body of evidence that shows changes in physical health can effect changes in mental health as well.

The study was conducted by researchers at various institutions across the United States and led by John Gunstad, an associate professor of psychology at Kent State University. The findings will be published in the Journal of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
